(I think that last one was meant as a compliment...right?)
I get these kind of comments all the time about my art. It's all about seeing the potential, and the story, in the mundane, even in what most people consider "trash."
Whether it is vintage book pages or leftover buttons or broken jewelry or old sewing notions, I look for ways to create art from it.
This type of art is called mixed-media collage, mixed-media altered art, or assemblage (depending on exactly what I'm creating or working with). It is when we use a variety of mediums, objects, found or reclaimed bits, old bottles, or literally anything else to refashion it into something new and beautiful.
To me, this kind of art is simply another form of storytelling. All of it is tactile and invites you to touch, explore, look deeper, and notice the smallest details.
Most of my art is inspired by my own books or are otherwise book or writing related. I use a lot of vintage images and actual ephemera in my art, and I make every effort I can to avoid AI images when I'm using digital resources.
You never know what you might find--a dried clipping of rosemary from my garden, a vintage stamp from my mother's collection, a scrap of old sheet music, an empty bottle. Much of the materials I use come from things I've collected or inherited or that I've found at Creative Reuse centers or other thrifted sources or rescued from the trash. I love taking something old, forgotten, and discarded and bringing out its inherent magic and beauty.
